Description: | From 2nd Annual Grebe Festival Website: Lake Almanor is the place to be the weekend of August 18th through 20th as we celebrate the extraordinary dancing grebes with our second annual Grebe Festival in Chester, CA. The National Audubon Society considers Lake Almanor, where the Western and Clark's grebes (Aechmophorus occidentalis and A. clarkii) come to nest, an Important Bird Area due to the significant loss of nesting habitat California's drought has caused in recent years. Late August is a great time to view colonies of grebes nesting on the lake, witness their incredible rushing displays, and watch hatchlings climb aboard their parents backs. Kayak and pontoon fieldtrips allow festival-goers an up-close (but not too close!) look at nesting grebes. Participants will explore the area's rich biodiversity and culture on fieldtrips in the Lake Almanor basin and Lassen National Forest. Educational materials, information on local organizations, and childrens activities are free and open to the public at the Almanor Recreation Center. Most fieldtrips and workshops are available for a fee, depending on the activity. Please visit
