Location Moorpark
Dates July 20, 2018 - July 22, 2018
Description:

From Children of Many Colors Native American Powwow Website:

This is Redbird's signature event, taking place at Moorpark College on the lower athletic field. Our 2018 powwow will begin with vendor set-up starting at noon on Friday followed by an open flute circle at 6 PM. All wind instruments and their players are welcome. The powwow proper kicks off Saturday morning at 11 AM and continues until 10 PM, resuming Sunday at 11 AM and closing at 6 PM Sunday evening.

The powwow welcomes everyone. We ask a $2.00 per vehicle donation to help defray expenses.

There are four significant additions to our program this year. Moorpark College and Redbird would like to offer two scholarships to native students. and the college suggested that they be first year, full expense scholarships - $2,500.00 each. The college will match Redbird's contribution. The powwow itself costs more than it earns (almost four times more) so we are not at all sure how we are going to fund the powwow, let alone a scholarship. But we are going to try. We would like to announce the scholarship details at or before the powwow. This much we know - one scholarship will be awarded to a tribally enrolled student. The other one will be awarded to a student based on community support. There are a lot of native students in southern California who for any number of reasons are not tribally enrolled but are active members of the Native American community. They deserve to be recognized.

Two of the other significant additions are awareness efforts. Following the lead of Debbi and Michael Watts and the drum Blue Star, and working with Bobby Whitebird, we will be dedicating time, energy and resources at the powwow to cancer awareness and diabetes awareness, and networking with local organizations to help us achieve this goal. Don't worry. We won't cut into your dancing and singing time much. As the powwow gets closer there will be more information to share.

Finally, we are hoping to do a campus "field trip" at some point during the powwow as an informal introduction for students - all students - who are considering attending Moorpark College. The details of this idea have not been worked out yet. We will be sure to post about it as July draws near.
