Craft Guilds originated in the Middle Ages of the European cultures. Their emphases were skills, quality work, instructions and merchandising. The Craft Guild of Nevada County is a new idea based on the old concept. Our purpose encompasses enabling craft persons and artisans to develop skills and new ideas and to share needs and concerns in a supportive atmosphere. The Craft Guild expects to continue the strong traditions of the historical guild producing the same standards of quality craft items. We would like to welcome you as a visitor to our Guild and we encourage your membership and participation. The Guild is a non-profit, community service organization. Guild members provide monthly tray favors for several local senior care facilities as well as holiday gifts for residents at Christmas time. Over the years, donations have also been made to school scholarships, art scholarships, Interfaith Food Ministry, the Senior Center, Holiday Cheer, Women of Worth and Hospitality House. Meetings are held the last Tuesday of each month at 6:00 pm in the Nevada County Superintendent of Schools offices, 112 Nevada City Hwy., Nevada City, CA The monthly newsletter keeps members up-to-date on guild activities, upcoming craft shows, etc. Workshops are hands-on classes of various crafts such as basket weaving, jewelry, floral, doll making and others. They are open to members at low cost. Some are open to the public. The Craft Guild of Nevada County sponsors "Winterfaire", an annual handcraft fair. All members support this event by serving on a Winterfaire committee. All qualifying members who wish to sell their crafts at the fair may do so at a minimal fee. Winterfaire is held the 3rd weekend of October at the Nevada County Fairgrounds, Grass Valley. Our current membership includes basket weavers, doll and bear makers, tole and decorative painters, quilters, ceramists, and the list goes on and on . If there is a craft being done, chances are that one or more of our members are involved. Many members are available to teach classes.
